A final list of 14 female players has been released ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa qualifiers coming up in September in Botswana.
The release according to Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) Public Relations Officer, Mr Bodie Musa, is a blend of young and experienced players out of 20 players that started camp in early August 2021.
The list has the return of Blessing Etim as captain while Omonye Asika was listed as vice-captain.
Others are Agatha Obulor, Taiwo Abdulquadri, Rachel Samson, Kehinde Abdulquadri and Abigail Igbobie.
Selected also to represent Nigeria senior female team are Salome Sunday, Miracle Imimole, Chinedum George, Mary Desmond, Esther Sandy, Joy Efosa and teenage sensation, Piety Lucky.
The ‘Female Yellow Green’ team features most of the players who played at the commemorative Kwibuka T20 tournament in Kigali, Rwanda in June 2021.
“The team is made of the most talented bunch of players who had best training and fitness drills in a world-class facility. We are optimistic for the best result.”
The Nigeria senior female team while in Edo state camping has addressed considerable challenges that befell the team’s low performance during the Rwanda genocide remembrances invitation cricket tournament.
Some of the challenges were the fitness of players, the team’s fielding mentality and longer bonding time among players to instill reasonable team results.
Nigeria will play against the likes of Namibia, Uganda, Cameroon and much respected Zimbabwe. The tournaments begins 7th to 20th September 2021.
