
All is now set for the novelty match organize by Excellent football club of Ughelli Delta state to honour Late Samuel Okwaraji.
August 12, 2021, will make it 32 years since the former Super Eagles player Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji passed on while on National duty.
Okwaraji collapsed and died of congestive heart failure in the 77th minute of a World Cup qualification match against Angola at the Lagos National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos State on 12 August 1989.
Speaking exclusively to EFC Media in Ughelli Tuesday, CEO of Excellent football club, Mr Onome James said arrangements have been concluded to have the best from his club play a novelty match on August 12 in honour of the former Super Eagles midfield maestro.
He said;
“we are determined to honour Late Samuel Okwaraji for being a great source of inspiration to the younger generation while he was alive and even after his death. We are putting together the best from our team to play and we hope this will provide a platform for fans, Nigerians and Non-Nigerians all over the world to remember this great Legend. He passed on 32 years ago but he lives on in our hearts. Continue to rest in the bosom of your Creator Amen.”
Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji (19 May 1964 – 12 August 1989) was a professional footballer who played internationally for Nigeria. He was also a qualified lawyer who had a masters in international law from the Pontifical Lateran University of Rome.
Onome also provided details of the venue and time, noting that black armband will be worn by all players/officials and a minute silence will be observed 77th minute of the match in honour of Okwaraji.
“The venue is the Ughelli Township Stadium, Ughelli Delta State and the kickoff is billed for 7am” he said.
