Gov. Okpebholo demands release of abducted victims and warns that kidnapping and insecurity cannot be used to gain political power.
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has called on kidnappers across the country to release all abducted victims immediately and without conditions.
The governor also said no political party can gain power through kidnapping, banditry, or any other form of crime.
He made the remarks on Tuesday during the flag-off of the APC campaign for the Edo South Senatorial District local government elections at Urhokpota Hall in Benin City.
Governor Okpebholo Demands Release of Abducted Victims
Okpebholo condemned the growing rate of kidnappings across the country. He warned against using insecurity to weaken governance or threaten national stability.
According to him, political ambition should never be pursued through violence, fear, or criminal activities.
“Those seeking political power should not distract President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from delivering good governance to Nigerians. Kidnapping innocent citizens will not win elections. Political power cannot be secured through criminal activities,” he said.
The governor expressed concern over the recent abduction of students, teachers, and other citizens in different parts of Nigeria, including Oyo State. He called for their immediate release and stressed that insecurity must not derail the government’s development plans.
Governor Backs Tinubu’s Reforms
Okpebholo praised President Tinubu’s economic reforms, especially the removal of fuel subsidy. He said the policy has increased funds available to states for infrastructure and development projects.
He also pledged Edo State’s support for the President ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“There is no vacancy in Aso Rock. Edo State will stand firmly behind President Tinubu and his Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.
APC Unveils Candidates for Local Government Elections
The governor also announced what he described as a new political direction for Edo State. He said the APC had presented a youthful and energetic group of candidates for the upcoming local government elections.
“We are changing the face of politics in Edo State by giving young and capable people the opportunity to lead at the grassroots level. The future belongs to our youths, and we are creating pathways for them to contribute meaningfully to governance,” he stated.
Deputy Governor Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa praised the governor’s commitment to youth inclusion. He noted that the administration has created opportunities for young people to occupy important positions in government.
The event ended with the official unveiling of the party’s Edo South Senatorial candidates. They include Engr. Ogbeide Ihama for the Senatorial District, Dr. Paddy Iyamu for Oredo Federal Constituency, and Barr. Omorede Igbinedion for Ovia Federal Constituency, among others.
