Edo to Establish Special Courts to Fast-Track Kidnapping, Cultism Cases as Okpebholo Moves to Crush Crime

Edo to Establish Special Courts Fast-Track Kidnapping, Cultism Cases as Governor Monday Okpebholo seeks accelerated prosecution of offenders to strengthen security and justice delivery across the state.

The Edo State Government is set to take a major step in the fight against kidnapping and cult-related violence as plans emerge to establish special courts dedicated to the speedy prosecution of such criminal cases.

Reliable indications suggest that Governor Monday Okpebholo has formally approached the state’s judiciary, requesting the constitution of Special Courts that would focus exclusively on cases involving kidnapping and cultism. The proposal is expected to empower designated judges to handle these cases on an accelerated basis, reducing delays that often slow down criminal trials.

Sources familiar with the development revealed that the Governor has sought the nomination of three judges—or any number deemed appropriate by the Chief Judge—to preside over the proposed courts.

If approved, the Special Courts will have the mandate to hear and determine kidnapping and cultism-related cases across Edo State with speed and efficiency, a move many believe could significantly strengthen the state’s criminal justice system.

The initiative follows Governor Okpebholo’s declaration on June 18, 2026, during the parade of suspected kidnappers at the Edo State Police Command Headquarters in Benin City. Addressing security concerns in the state, the Governor vowed to ensure swift justice for criminal elements.

“We are going to set up a special court to prosecute kidnappers and cultists,” Okpebholo declared.

Although official confirmation from the office of the Chief Judge is still being awaited, the proposal has already generated positive reactions from stakeholders and lawmakers.

Senator Joseph Ikpea, who represents Edo Central Senatorial District, described the initiative as a bold and necessary response to the growing security challenges facing communities across the state. According to him, faster prosecution and timely judgments would serve as a deterrent to criminal activities while restoring public confidence in the justice system.

Security experts have also noted that specialized courts could help reduce case backlogs, improve conviction rates, and ensure that offenders are held accountable without unnecessary delays.

Should the proposal receive judicial approval, the Special Courts would mark one of the most significant legal and institutional responses to kidnapping and cultism in Edo State in recent years, signaling a new phase in the government’s determination to restore law and order.

For many residents, the move represents more than a judicial reform—it is a clear message that the state is intensifying efforts to make Edo safer for businesses, families, and future generations.
