The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has set up a fact-finding committee to investigate the Super Falcons’ World Cup failure and other recent setbacks in Nigerian football.
The move follows Nigeria’s disappointing campaign at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The Super Falcons exited the tournament at the quarter-final stage. They then suffered a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the playoff for a place in the Inter-Confederation Playoffs.
That defeat ended Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
It also ended the Super Falcons’ remarkable record of appearing at every edition of the Women’s World Cup since the tournament began in 1991.
The NFF said the new committee will examine the problems behind Nigeria’s recent struggles in international competitions.
The investigation will focus on the setbacks suffered by the national teams, including the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
The federation wants the committee to identify the factors that contributed to the disappointing results.
It will also recommend measures that could help Nigeria avoid similar failures in future competitions.
Ambassador Fanny Amun, MON, will chair the fact-finding committee.
The NFF has also appointed several former Nigerian internationals and football experts to the panel.
Former Nigeria internationals Ladan Bosso, Desire Oparanozie and Mutiu Adepoju will serve as members.
Dr Alex Mana will also join the committee.
Mr Nasiru Jibril has been appointed as the committee’s secretary.
The combination of former players, coaches and football administrators is expected to give the investigation a broad perspective.
The Super Falcons’ failure represents a major setback for Nigerian women’s football.
Nigeria had qualified for every previous edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup since 1991.
The team’s absence from the 2027 tournament will therefore mark a historic break in that record.
The NFF now hopes the committee can identify the weaknesses that contributed to the setback.
