Governor Okpebholo Charges New Edo Assembly Leadership on Unity, Transparency and Teamwork
Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has urged the new leadership of the Edo State House of Assembly to lead with humility, unity and transparency.
The governor also called for teamwork and open dialogue among lawmakers. He urged members to put personal differences aside and focus on serving the people.
Okpebholo gave the advice when he received the newly elected Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Prince Yekini Oisayemoje Idaiye.
Idaiye represents Akoko-Edo Constituency 1. He led the new Assembly leadership on a visit to the governor.
Governor Okpebholo Calls for Humble Leadership
Governor Okpebholo reminded the lawmakers that political positions do not last forever.
He urged them to approach their responsibilities with humility and a strong sense of duty.
“We must put arrogance aside to serve our people better because today we are here and tomorrow we don’t know where we will be,” the governor said.
He asked the new leadership to promote transparency, dialogue and inclusiveness within the Assembly.
Okpebholo also advised lawmakers to resolve disagreements within the House. He warned against taking internal disputes to social media.
“It’s a new leadership. I don’t know what happened. Whatever must have happened in the House is for the House, and it remains there,” he said.
The governor noted that he had experience as a parliamentarian. He therefore urged lawmakers to respect one another and protect the dignity of the Assembly.
Okpebholo Urges Speaker to Carry Everyone Along
The governor asked Speaker Idaiye to understand the responsibility that comes with his new position.
He said effective leadership requires every member to feel included in the affairs of the House.
“It is not just to be a leader, but a responsible leader,” Okpebholo said.
He urged Idaiye to remain transparent with his colleagues and listen to their concerns.
“You are now carrying the shoulders of many people and you have to be transparent with your colleagues. You have to carry everybody along,” he added.
Okpebholo warned that excluding lawmakers from important decisions could create new divisions.
“The only way you can have an effective leadership is for you to carry everybody along,” the governor said.
He also encouraged Idaiye to maintain the positive reputation his colleagues had given him.
“Everyone is saying good things about you. I want you to remain the way they have described you,” Okpebholo said.
Teamwork Is Key to Effective Leadership
Governor Okpebholo described teamwork as a foundation for successful legislative leadership.
He urged lawmakers to speak openly when they have concerns. He also encouraged them to use private discussions and public dialogue to resolve issues.
“Teamwork is the bedrock of effective leadership,” the governor said.
He added that lawmakers must believe in themselves and communicate openly.
“Dialogue is always the key,” Okpebholo stressed.
The governor said he wants the Edo Assembly to remain peaceful. He noted that the House had operated without a major crisis for about two years.
“I want us to have a peaceful house,” he said.
Okpebholo prayed that the Assembly would maintain the same stability during the next two years.
Governor Okpebholo Speaks on Coming Elections
With the next elections approaching, Governor Okpebholo urged lawmakers to strengthen their presence in their constituencies.
He called on them to work hard and secure electoral success.
“I pray that you people will take charge of your constituencies. Elections are coming. We have to work hard to see that we record success,” he said.
The governor also encouraged lawmakers who may not return to the Assembly after the elections.
He assured them that their political careers could take new directions.
“Sometimes, every disappointment is another appointment that can lead you to somewhere higher or greater,” Okpebholo said.
New Speaker Pledges Assembly Support
Speaker Idaiye said the new leadership visited the governor to formally introduce itself.
He said the new team was ready to stabilise the Assembly and support the state government.
“Your Excellency, we are here this afternoon to formally introduce the new leadership of the Edo State House of Assembly to you,” Idaiye said.
The Speaker also pledged the Assembly’s support for the governor’s administration.
He said lawmakers were ready to support programmes aimed at moving Edo State forward.
“We are there for you. Whatever you want us to do to move Edo forward, we are ready for it,” Idaiye said.
The meeting was attended by Secretary to the Edo State Government Umar Musa Ikhilor, Chief of Staff to the Governor Yakubu Musa and Edo State APC Chairman Jarrett Tenebe.
Members of the party’s State Working Committee also attended the meeting.
The governor’s message to the new Assembly leadership was clear: unity, transparency and teamwork must guide the House as lawmakers work together to serve Edo people and maintain peace in the Assembly.
