The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Edo State Council, believes that, since the extension of the Ossiomo Power at the Council’s Secretariat, it has boosted the economic activities of members.
The leadership also acknowledged that with the provision of the 24-hour electricity supply, Journalists in the state have improved their professional crafts adding that it has now become the envy of bystanders.
This was part of the message delivered by the Union’s Chairman,
Comrade Festus Alenkhe on Wednesday, at the Council’s Secretariat in Benin City, when he played host to the governor.
Recall that, Governor Godwin Obaseki had earlier committed to supplying 24-hour electricity to the secretariat of the state’s chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ from the government’s Public Private Partnership PPP power initiative, Ossiomo Power.
Obaseki disclosed this when he received members of the Edo NUJ, led by its new chairman, Festus Alenkhe, who was on a courtesy visit at the Government House, Benin City sometime in 2022.
While commending the governor for his timely support for the union, and efforts in the delivery of key infrastructure in the state, Comrade Alenkhe like the proverbial Oliver Twist, in another breath, appealed to him, to help step down the fiber optics being connected across the state to enhance easy access to the internet facility at the press Center.
Alenkhe also urged the Governor to fulfill his pledge of providing the Union with a Bus for easy mobility.
Responding, Governor Godwin Obaseki hailed the mastery of the leadership of the union in the transformation of its secretariat.
Obaseki noted that he is particularly excited about the various steps taken by the leadership to expunge unqualified members, stressing that no regulation is more comprehensive than the regulatory measures essayed within oneself.
While craving for stronger ties between the government and Journalists in the state for progressive governance, the Governor urged members to continue to stay in a profession that must rest on expatriate and verified documents.
Some Journalists who spoke at the event, including, Comrades Efosa Uwangue of ITV Chapel and Edosa Okunbor of Federated Chapel praised the governor for his performance.
However, the duo encouraged the governor to do more by listening to the people as well as providing access to some of the projects he has executed for public awareness.
