A New Guard for a Cleaner Edo: Okpebholo Launches Environmental Compliance Corps

Edo State took a decisive step toward a healthier and more sustainable future as Governor Monday Okpebholo inaugurated the Edo State Environmental Compliance Corps (EECC), reaffirming his administration’s resolve to protect the environment, safeguard public health, and entrench responsible governance.

The newly inaugurated corps, made up of 100 carefully selected personnel, represents the first line of enforcement for the state’s environmental laws. Addressing the officers through the Commissioner for Finance, Hon. Emmanuel Okoebor, Governor Okpebholo urged them to carry out their duties with courage, integrity, and a strong sense of purpose. He emphasized that their conduct must inspire compliance, earn public respect, and strengthen trust between government and the people.

According to the governor, a clean environment is more than a social obligation; it is an economic necessity that drives productivity, attracts investment, and improves overall well-being. He charged the corps to work professionally and within the confines of the law, while maintaining close engagement with communities to promote environmental awareness and compliance.

The Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Hon. Nosa Adams, described the inauguration as a major milestone in the implementation of the newly signed Edo State Environmental Waste Management and Pollution Law. He explained that the 100 officers are the first batch of the EECC, selected through a credible process and trained intensively over four days to ensure they fully understand the scope and demands of the law.

Hon. Adams noted that the law is comprehensive, covering all aspects of environmental protection and ecosystem management. The corps members will be deployed across the three senatorial districts of the state to enforce compliance and ensure residents adhere to environmental standards.

With the launch of the EECC, the government expressed confidence that effective enforcement of the law would lead to a cleaner, greener, and healthier Edo State, setting a strong foundation for sustainable development and improved quality of life for all residents.
