Alex Iwobi hailed his spectacular goal in Fulham’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur as “unique,” after helping the Whites secure another key win in the Premier League.
The Nigerian midfielder scored a stunning finish from outside the box at Craven Cottage, capping a composed display from Marco Silva’s side.
“Unique; that’s the best way to put it. I don’t think anyone has the groin to open up their hip and side-foot it like that,” Iwobi told Sky Sports. “When [Harry Wilson] passes to me I had one thought to side foot it. We do it in training, so my teammates weren’t surprised.”
Fulham had opened the scoring through Wilson, who rifled home after Oscar Bobb returned the ball into his path. Iwobi then doubled the advantage in the 34th minute with a powerful side-footed effort into the corner from the edge of the area.
“It’s always special to win a London derby in front of our fans,” Iwobi added. “We felt we controlled the game and created a lot of chances, and credit to us for staying strong towards the end.” He also praised Wilson, saying: “He is a special player. When he has the ball, we know he will create something or score. We give him that trust and freedom.”
Silva echoed the admiration for Iwobi’s finish, calling it one of his finest for Fulham. “It’s one of his best goals; he is capable of these types of things,” the manager said.
Iwobi now has four goals and three assists in 22 league appearances this season.
Back-to-back wins over Sunderland and Tottenham have lifted Fulham to 40 points, just three behind seventh place as the race for European qualification heats up.
“We just need to stay mentally strong and stick together,” Iwobi told Fulham’s official website. “Everyone is fighting for each other, even those who came into the squad. We have a competitive spirit, and as long as we keep that, I’m confident we can finish high on the table.”
Reflecting on the team’s resurgence, he added: “We had a tough run, losing three out of four, so getting back-to-back wins gives us a boost and the confidence to keep going. The results speak for themselves, and it’s about bringing the quality we show in training into the matches.”
