Anambra Imposes ₦50m Levy on Presidential Aspirants for 2027

Anambra imposes ₦50m levy on presidential aspirants for 2027 campaigns, introducing new permit fees and strict regulations for political advertising.

The Anambra State Government has introduced new campaign regulations ahead of the 2027 general elections. The policy includes a ₦50 million permit fee for presidential aspirants who want to campaign in the state.

The announcement was made by the Anambra State Signage and Advertisement Agency (ANSAA). The agency said all political parties and candidates must obtain permits before carrying out campaign activities or displaying campaign materials.

Under the guidelines, presidential candidates will pay ₦50 million for campaign permits. Senatorial candidates will pay ₦20 million. House of Representatives candidates are expected to pay ₦5 million.

Chairmanship candidates will pay ₦2.5 million. State House of Assembly candidates will be charged ₦1.5 million. Councillorship candidates will pay ₦100,000.

Speaking in Awka, ANSAA Assistant General Manager Chika Ngobili said the regulations were introduced to control campaign activities and outdoor advertising.

He explained that the permit covers several campaign materials and activities. These include posters, billboards, banners, branded vehicles, campaign booths, rallies, fliers, and public address systems.

Ngobili said the agency was acting within its legal mandate. He noted that the regulations would help maintain order during the election season.

He also said the government wants to prevent the defacement of public infrastructure. Campaign materials often damage public facilities during election periods.

“The guidelines were issued in line with the regulatory framework governing political campaign activities in Anambra State,” he said.

The agency stated that all political advertisements must receive approval from the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) before public display.

ANSAA also announced restrictions on campaign material placement. Posters and banners cannot be placed on government buildings, bridges, flyovers, road signs, schools, hospitals, or utility facilities.

The agency warned that political parties and support groups cannot erect billboards on their own. Only practitioners registered with ARCON and licensed by ANSAA can handle outdoor political advertisements.

Ngobili also warned against removing or damaging opponents’ campaign materials. He said enforcement teams would monitor compliance across the state.

According to him, anyone who violates the regulations will face sanctions under existing state laws.

The new policy is already generating reactions among political stakeholders. Many are expected to assess its impact as preparations for the 2027 elections continue.
