Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State is taking a hands-on approach to infrastructure development, intensifying oversight of ongoing road projects and sending a clear message to contractors: deliver quality work and fast.
On August 31, 2024, fresh from a visit to Irrua in Esan Central, the Governor embarked on a rigorous inspection tour of key roadworks across the state. His first stop was the 9.3km Illeh–Ukhun Road in Esan West, where significant progress had been made drainage systems were in place, parts of the road had been asphalted, and others were primed for final surfacing.
In a bold move that showcased his commitment, Governor Okpebholo stepped out on foot at the bustling Moscow Junction along Sapele Road in Benin City, trekking nearly three kilometers through major junctions including Limit, PZ, Agip, and Peanut. Along the way, he inspected drainage installations and assessed the quality of construction materials drawing cheers from residents and traders who hailed his efforts to fix a route that had long been a source of daily frustration.
The Governor didn’t mince words when reflecting on earlier lapses. “What I saw two weeks ago was unacceptable,” he said. “I made it clear that substandard work would not be tolerated. Today, I am encouraged by the improvements, but our focus remains on timely delivery and long-term durability.”
He reiterated his administration’s zero-tolerance policy for inefficiency, pointing out that contracts for the Oghehe and Old Road projects had nearly been revoked due to poor performance until recent upgrades showed tangible progress.
Contractor Engr. Ubani Stanley acknowledged the Governor’s influence in raising the standard of work. “His last visit was a wake-up call. We took it seriously, and today, he has seen the results. We’re fully committed to meeting expectations,” he affirmed.
Governor Okpebholo’s inspection tour is part of his broader SHINE Agenda, which prioritizes strategic infrastructure as a catalyst for economic growth and community development. He assured citizens that more projects were in the pipeline across the state, aimed at improving mobility, connecting communities, and ensuring that public funds are used effectively.
We’re not just building roads,” the Governor said. “We’re rebuilding trust between government and the people.
