Governor Okpebholo Reads Riot Act to Contractors Over Delays on Benin-Sapele Road

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has issued a stern warning to contractors handling the Benin-Sapele Road project, expressing strong dissatisfaction over the slow pace of work despite financial mobilization from the state government.

The governor, who personally inspected the 20km stretch of the project on Sunday evening, made several unscheduled stops to assess the quality of construction including the drainage, pavement, and materials being used. He also engaged with motorists caught in the daily traffic gridlock, many of whom cheered the governor for his hands-on approach and the state’s collaboration with the Federal Government to rehabilitate the critical road corridor.

Governor Okpebholo made it clear that contractors responsible for the delayed section funded by the Edo State Government will be summoned to provide explanations or risk facing sanctions.

“I’ve seen the quality of the work, and while it’s good, the speed is unacceptable. People are suffering,” the governor said. “We must take urgent and decisive steps to make this road motorable again. The delays are hurting not just commuters, but the economy of the area as well.”

His convoy visited several key points along the route, including Peanut Junction, Ogheghe Junction by Akenuwa Community, Ogheghe Road off Sapele Road, and the long-neglected Old Road, which had been abandoned by past administrations despite numerous promises to residents.

A critical issue raised during the inspection was the flawed drainage design. The governor pointed out that the current drainage plan stops midway through town, raising concerns about proper water flow and the risk of future flooding.

“We’re going to revisit the drainage design. You can’t stop it in the middle of the town and expect water to magically disappear,” Okpebholo said. “We’ll ensure the revised design allows proper outflow and de-silting so that when this road is completed, it will last.”

The governor also announced that work will soon begin on the next 7km phase of the road, underscoring his administration’s commitment to delivering infrastructure that directly improves the lives of Edo residents.

“Our people are crying out, and rightly so. We’re not here for politics we’re here to solve problems. This road must be completed, and quickly,” he added.

Governor Okpebholo’s unannounced visit and his tough stance have sent a clear message: delays will no longer be tolerated, and infrastructure projects must reflect both urgency and quality for the benefit of the people.
