Living Wage Policy Gains National Recognition
Labour leaders across Nigeria have honoured Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma for prioritising workers’ welfare.
The recognition came during the 2026 Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees Week in Owerri.
The event held at Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu Square attracted hundreds of workers and labour leaders.
During the ceremony, NULGE presented Uzodimma with the Pacesetter Award for improving workers’ welfare.
Labour leaders said the Governor pays workers a living wage rather than a basic minimum wage.
According to them, the policy has improved morale among public servants in Imo State.
NULGE President Aliyu Haruna Kankara delivered a goodwill message from NLC President Joe Ajaero.
He said labour leaders nationwide agree that Uzodimma prioritises workers’ welfare.
Kankara praised the N104,000 wage implemented for local government employees in the state.
He said the policy reflects respect for dignity of public servants.
Moreover, he urged other governors to adopt similar wage reforms.
Governor Uzodimma described the N104,000 wage as sustainable for the state economy.
He explained that paying salaries and promotions are statutory responsibilities.
According to him, responsible governance requires protecting workers’ welfare.
Furthermore, the state adopted creative revenue strategies to support the wage structure.
The Governor said improved wages encourage productivity and economic growth.
He also assured workers that salaries will increase as the economy improves.
Uzodimma urged workers to remain disciplined and committed to public service.
He described civil servants as the backbone of government operations.
Meanwhile, the Governor rewarded outstanding local government workers during the ceremony.
Twenty-seven workers received one million naira each for dedication.
Additionally, the best staff member received a five million naira Star Prize.
Kankara commended the Governor for strengthening local government administration.
He also praised the decision to allow union elections without interference.
Similarly, Imo NULGE Chairman Charles Okechukwu Okeke applauded the Governor’s policies.
Okeke said the administration lifted a promotion embargo introduced in 2014.
He added that double promotions were approved for qualified workers.
According to him, Imo currently pays the highest minimum wage among Nigerian states.
Workers pledged continued dedication in appreciation of the reforms.
Finally, labour leaders presented the Pacesetter Award to Governor Uzodimma.
Many dignitaries, union leaders and government officials attended the celebration in Owerri.
