Nearly a decade after a devastating fire left Oba Market in ruins, the heart of Benin City is beating again. Governor Monday Okpebholo, staying true to his campaign promise, has begun the ambitious reconstruction of the iconic market bringing a renewed sense of hope to thousands of traders and residents who have waited years for its revival.
During an inspection visit to the site, the Governor was greeted with cheers and songs from jubilant traders, many of whom had endured years of broken promises under the previous administration. This visit wasn’t just ceremonial it marked a turning point.
Addressing the crowd, Governor Okpebholo reiterated that the project aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which has empowered states with resources to tackle critical development needs. The reconstruction of Oba Market, he said, is more than just rebuilding structures it’s about restoring livelihoods and transforming a major commercial space into a vibrant, modern hub.
“This market has remained a shadow of itself for ten years,” the Governor told traders. “Today, we are breathing life back into it not with mere words, but with action. The people deserve progress, and my administration will deliver it.”
Set to be completed by June 2026 with efforts underway to beat the deadline the redesigned market promises a blend of tradition and modernity. Plans include over 450 open stalls, multi-level lock-up shops, and vital amenities such as a crèche, sick bay, restaurants, and a mini fire station all designed to ensure a safe and thriving environment for both traders and shoppers.
Importantly, the Governor assured that the original occupants of the market will not be displaced. “This project belongs to the people. We’re not just rebuilding; we’re upgrading for their benefit,” he said.
Project Manager Aneru Izuagbe also shared insights into the scale and quality of the redevelopment. According to him, the market is being remodeled into a mall-like commercial complex that blends functionality with safety. With a tight 251-day construction timeline, his team is pushing to deliver the project ahead of schedule.
The reconstruction of Oba Market is more than a physical rebuild it symbolizes a return of trust, opportunity, and pride for the people of Benin City. Under Governor Okpebholo’s leadership, one of Edo’s most cherished landmarks is poised to shine brighter than ever.
