Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has paid heartfelt tribute to Nigeria’s fallen heroes, describing their ultimate sacrifice as the bedrock of the nation’s peace, unity and continued existence.
The Governor spoke at the official launch of the 2026 Emblem Appeal Fund, held at the Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City. Represented by the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, he expressed deep sympathy with the families of deceased service personnel, noting that their loss is one shared by the entire nation.
According to the Governor, the freedoms enjoyed by Edo people and Nigerians today were secured through the courage and selflessness of men and women who laid down their lives in defence of the country. He described Armed Forces Remembrance Day as a solemn occasion that calls for reflection, gratitude and renewed commitment to the ideals for which the fallen heroes fought.
To demonstrate his administration’s support for veterans and bereaved families, Governor Okpebholo announced the launch of the 2026 Emblem Appeal Fund and made a personal donation of ₦10 million.
“The peace and unity we enjoy today did not come cheap,” he said. “Our fallen heroes paid the ultimate price so that Nigeria may stand. We honour their bravery, stand in solidarity with their families, and recommit ourselves to protecting the values they defended.”
Earlier, the Edo State Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Mr. Sunny Egbogie, praised the Governor for his consistent concern for veterans and families of fallen service members. Leading widows and retired servicemen to the event, he described the Governor’s gesture as a strong morale booster for ex-servicemen and those still living with the pain of loss.
Mr. Egbogie also called for greater inclusion of trained veterans in the state’s security framework, noting that their experience and discipline would enhance security operations. He appealed for improved logistical support, including vehicles and motorcycles, an upward review of the Legion’s subvention, and special consideration for widows and veterans during the festive season.
The event was attended by top government officials, security chiefs, commissioners, permanent secretaries, heads of ministries and parastatals, as well as widows of fallen heroes.
