In a bold nighttime push to secure communities ahead of the festive season, troops of Operation WHIRL STROKE, working in close coordination with the Nigeria Police Force in Zaki-Biam and the Benue State Community Protection Guard, launched a decisive operation on 11 December 2025 after receiving actionable intelligence. Their target: a criminal gang that had set up an illegal roadblock along the route linking Aturuku, Wembe, and Ayati villages in Borkyo Council Ward of Ukum Local Government Area.
The gang had allegedly been ambushing unsuspecting travellers at the junction, robbing and terrorising residents. Acting swiftly, the security team confronted the armed group, engaging them in a brief but intense exchange. Three members of the gang were neutralised as the rest fled into the surrounding bushes. Troops recovered two motorcycles used by the criminals and immediately intensified search operations to track down the escapees.
Community verification later confirmed the identities of the three suspects, who were linked to a feared syndicate notorious for kidnappings and violent crimes across Ukum LGA. Their operations were believed to be connected to recent abductions around the Zaki-Biam yam market and tied to a well-known bandit kingpin active in the Shitile axis of Katsina-Ala LGA.
Commending the success of the mission, Major General Moses Gara, Force Commander of OPWS, praised the teamwork, discipline, and professionalism displayed by all security personnel involved. He urged troops to sustain the momentum, strengthen intelligence-driven operations, and maintain a strong presence in vulnerable communities. Major General Gara reiterated OPWS’s commitment to safeguarding lives, supporting civil authority, and ensuring enduring peace across the entire Joint Operations Area.
