Ododo Lifts the Lid on Power in Kogi, Defends His ‘Working Cabal’

Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo has stirred political conversation after openly admitting that he runs his administration with the help of a tightly knit inner circle he boldly describes as a “working cabal.”

The governor made the remark while inaugurating projects across the state, using the occasion to explain how decisions are shaped within his government. According to Ododo, this inner circle was not formed by accident but with the full knowledge and approval of his predecessor, Yahaya Bello.

Ododo was quick to draw a distinction between the cabal he now leads and the one he once belonged to under Bello’s administration. While acknowledging his experience in the previous government, he suggested that the current structure is more purposeful and results-driven, designed to deliver concrete outcomes rather than merely wield influence.

Rather than shy away from a term that often attracts suspicion in Nigerian politics, the governor embraced it, presenting his “cabal” as a disciplined and coordinated team focused on moving government business forward. In his telling, it is less about exclusion and more about efficiency.

The comments underscored the political continuity between Ododo and Bello, both members of the All Progressives Congress and long-time allies. Ododo’s rise to the governorship followed years of service as auditor-general under Bello, culminating in his victory at the November 2023 polls and his inauguration in January 2024.

By choosing a project inauguration to make such a candid admission, the governor appeared keen to link his leadership style to visible achievements on the ground. Roads, buildings and other infrastructure unveiled at the events were presented as proof that his inner circle is delivering on its mandate.

Political watchers have noted that few Nigerian leaders openly acknowledge the existence of powerful inner circles, let alone defend them so publicly. Ododo’s remarks, unusual as they are, project confidence in his approach and recast a controversial concept as a tool for governance.

As projects continue to roll out across Kogi State, the governor’s “working cabal” is now firmly in the public eye, tied directly to the successes or failures of his young administration.
