The Edo Diaspora Agency Assures Residents of More Free Healthcare Outreaches after a successful week-long medical mission in Uhunmwonde and Oredo Local Government Areas.
The free outreach took place at the Oredo Local Government Council Secretariat in Benin City. Hundreds of residents received medical attention during the exercise.
Speaking at the event, the Director-General of the Edo State Diaspora Agency (ESDA), Dr. Lauretta Oduware Ogboro-Okor, said the programme exceeded expectations. According to her, the large turnout showed the need for more free healthcare services across the state.
As a result, the agency plans to organise similar programmes more often. She said Edo indigenes living abroad remain committed to supporting healthcare projects at home.
Furthermore, Dr. Ogboro-Okor praised the Edo State Government for creating a peaceful and supportive environment. She explained that the government’s support helped health workers reach more people.
She also thanked Nurses Across The Borders (NAB) and the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation Europe (NIDOE). Together, the partners delivered quality healthcare services throughout the outreach.
The programme offered more than routine medical checks. Doctors treated different illnesses and provided health advice. In addition, they carried out basic medical tests and prescribed medication where necessary.
Patients with serious medical conditions received extra attention. Instead of ending their treatment at the venue, doctors referred them to the Edo Specialist Hospital. There, they will receive further examination and specialist care.
Beyond healthcare, the agency has more plans for residents. For example, Dr. Ogboro-Okor announced a skills acquisition programme during the 2026 Nigeria Diaspora Week. She said the initiative will empower young people and improve livelihoods.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Oredo Local Government Council, Engr. Gabriel Iduseri, applauded members of the Edo diaspora. He described their support as generous and inspiring.
According to him, the outreach has improved access to healthcare for many residents. He also pledged the council’s support for future programmes.
In addition, Iduseri said the Edo State Government has empowered all 18 local government councils. This support allows them to introduce projects that improve the welfare of residents.
Beneficiaries expressed joy after receiving free medical care. Many described the programme as timely and life-changing. Some also said they could not have paid for the treatment on their own.
Several residents thanked the Edo diaspora community for the intervention. They also appreciated the Edo State Government and partner organisations for making the outreach possible.
The event attracted many dignitaries. Among them were Mrs. Sarah Chukwuemeka (Decency), the African Coordinator of Women at the Well of Living Waters Charity Organisation, and a delegation led by Dr. Jessica Edmund.
Officials from the Edo State Health and Sanitation Department also attended the event. Their presence strengthened the partnership between government agencies and healthcare organisations.
