Edo Government Launches Measles-Rubella Vaccine Taskforce, Urges Public Awareness Ahead of 2026 Rollout

In a decisive move to strengthen public health and protect future generations, the Edo State Government, through the Office of the First Lady, has inaugurated a Technical Working Group (TWG) to drive the rollout of the Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccine slated for January 2026.

The inauguration ceremony, held at the John Odigie-Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA) in Benin City, was led by Mrs. Edesili Anani, Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady. She charged members of the TWG with the crucial responsibility of raising awareness, educating the public, and ensuring widespread acceptance of the MR vaccine.

“The Measles-Rubella vaccine is not just a replacement it’s an upgrade in our immunization schedule,” Mrs. Anani stated. “It offers dual protection, shielding our children from the dangers of measles and protecting pregnant women and unborn children from the devastating impact of rubella.”

She highlighted the serious health risks of rubella, including congenital rubella syndrome, which can cause heart defects, deafness, and developmental issues in newborns. “With this vaccine, we’re not just preventing illness we’re safeguarding futures.”

Mrs. Anani reaffirmed the Okpebholo administration’s commitment to prioritizing child and maternal health, describing it as a central pillar of Edo’s healthcare agenda. She noted that the First Lady’s office will continue to champion initiatives that strengthen routine immunization, improve access to care, and ensure no child is left behind.

Health Commissioner, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomole, underscored the urgency of public sensitization to counter misinformation and conspiracy theories often associated with vaccines. He emphasized that the TWG’s role includes educating communities, dispelling fears, and guiding an effective statewide rollout.

“As we contend with ongoing public health threats such as diphtheria, dengue, Lassa fever, and yellow fever, preventing a measles or rubella outbreak must be a top priority,” Dr. Oshiomole said. “We are preparing our health facilities and training our personnel to ensure the MR vaccine rollout in January 2026 is smooth and successful.”

The highlight of the event was the formal inauguration of the Technical Working Group by Mrs. Anani, who administered the oath of service. Members pledged to carry out their duties with diligence, dedication, and professionalism to ensure the success of the initiative.

With the groundwork now laid, Edo State takes a significant step forward in its mission to protect the health of mothers and children and to deliver on its promise of accessible, quality healthcare for all.
