ADC Presidential Candidate: A faction of the ADC says Atiku Abubakar is not its 2027 flagbearer and announces Professor Chris Uba as its candidate.

The battle over the ADC Presidential Candidate for the 2027 election has taken a fresh turn. A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) says former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is not its presidential candidate.

The faction is led by National Chairman Nafiu Bala Gombe. It announced Professor Chris Uba as the party’s ADC Presidential Candidate.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Gombe said Atiku “is not, and has never been,” the ADC Presidential Candidate. He said the statement was necessary to clear public confusion.

According to Gombe, another group led by former Senate President David Mark has no legal authority to act for the party.

He said the group is not recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). As a result, it cannot organise congresses, conduct primaries, or make decisions for the ADC.

Furthermore, Gombe denied reports that the ADC has joined any political coalition.

He said the party remains independent. He added that the ADC will contest the 2027 elections on its own platform.

“The African Democratic Congress is not in any alliance, merger, or coalition with any political party,” he said.

Chris Uba Named ADC Presidential Candidate

Gombe said the party followed its constitution before choosing its ADC Presidential Candidate.

He also said the process complied with the Electoral Act 2026 and INEC guidelines.

“The African Democratic Congress presents Professor Chris Uba as its duly recognised flag bearer,” Gombe said.

He described Uba as a capable leader with the experience and character to lead Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the faction warned Atiku against presenting himself as the ADC Presidential Candidate.

“The leadership of the ADC issues a final warning to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to stop parading himself as the party’s presidential candidate,” Gombe said.

In addition, he said the ADC would not allow anyone to use the party for personal political ambition.

He also promised that the party would protect its name through legal means if necessary.

The faction dismissed claims that anyone was trying to stop the ADC from taking part in the 2027 elections.

Instead, Gombe said the party has confidence in INEC and Nigeria’s electoral process.

He urged members and supporters to remain calm. He also asked them to ignore statements from unauthorised groups.

Finally, Gombe said the ADC is fully prepared for the 2027 general elections.

He said the party will present candidates for the presidency, governorships, the National Assembly, state assemblies, and local government elections.

The debate over the ADC Presidential Candidate is likely to continue. However, this faction insists that Professor Chris Uba remains its only recognised flagbearer.
