The Police Invite VeryDarkMan controversy has attracted nationwide attention after the Nigeria Police Force confirmed that it summoned social media personality Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, to support allegations he made against Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG Moshood Jimoh.
The Force also confirmed that AIG Moshood Jimoh will undergo questioning. The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department will conduct the administrative review.
The development follows allegations made by VeryDarkMan in a video shared on his social media platforms. He accused AIG Jimoh of conspiring to implicate businessman Ahmed Tajudeen Akanbi in a murder case.
Furthermore, VeryDarkMan questioned the police investigation into the death of Sheriff Salami. He argued that the handling of the case raised concerns about the integrity of Nigeria’s criminal justice system.
However, the Nigeria Police Force said the criminal case had already been investigated. It explained that the matter is now before a court of competent jurisdiction after receiving legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
According to the police, the case is now sub judice. Therefore, the judiciary alone will determine the outcome. The Force also insisted that it would not conduct the trial through media discussions or public campaigns.
Meanwhile, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, disclosed that the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Abuja formally invited VeryDarkMan on July 30, 2026. The invitation requested that he appear before investigators and provide evidence supporting his public claims.
The police said the decision reflects their commitment to investigating every credible allegation of misconduct. They added that no officer receives special treatment because of rank or position.
In addition, the Force explained that complaints against police officers follow established procedures. These channels include the Force CID, the Force Complaint Response Unit, and, where necessary, the Office of the Inspector-General of Police.
The police also stressed that discipline within the Nigeria Police Force follows the Constitution, the Police Act 2020, Police Regulations, Force Orders, and other administrative rules. According to the statement, those regulations apply equally to every officer.
While acknowledging Nigerians’ constitutional right to freedom of expression, the Force warned that such rights do not protect defamatory statements or unsupported allegations. It said anyone making serious claims should present evidence through the appropriate legal channels.
Furthermore, the police stated that investigators would examine every allegation objectively. They assured the public that any officer found guilty of misconduct would face disciplinary action in line with the law.
However, the Force also warned that it could pursue legal action if investigations reveal that false allegations deliberately damaged the reputation of an officer or the institution.
The Nigeria Police Force urged VeryDarkMan to honour the invitation and cooperate fully with investigators. It also encouraged all parties to allow the judicial process in the separate criminal case to proceed without interference.
Finally, the Force reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and accountability. It maintained that no officer is above the law and that every genuine complaint receives proper investigation through due process.
