Alex Ekubo dies at 40 after battling liver cancer as Nollywood stars, celebrities and fans mourn the beloved actor with emotional tributes.
The Nigerian movie industry is in deep mourning after the death of popular actor Alex Ekubo.
Reports say the actor died on Monday night at Evercare Hospital in Lekki, Lagos. He reportedly battled liver cancer before his death. Sadly, he was 40 years old.
Meanwhile, former BBNaija star and Actors Guild spokesperson, Boma Akpore, confirmed the news on Tuesday. He also said the family moved the actor’s body to Ebony Vaults in Ikoyi.
Soon after the news broke, many celebrities shared emotional tributes online.
For instance, actor Godwin Nnadiekwe mourned Ekubo in an Instagram post. He wrote:
“I’m struggling to find the words. This news has truly broken me. Nollywood has lost a rare soul.”
Similarly, veteran filmmaker Lancelot Imasuen described the death as painful and shocking. He also recalled giving Ekubo his first movie role.
In addition, Funke Akindele paid tribute to the late actor. She remembered their friendship and the nickname “Ore mi,” which Ekubo often called her.
Furthermore, several other celebrities mourned the actor. They include Bolanle Ninalowo, Peter Okoye, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Omoni Oboli, Mo Abudu, Kate Henshaw, Yvonne Jegede, Kunle Remi and Ruth Kadiri.
Likewise, activist Omoyele Sowore described Ekubo as a “rare talent.” Also, broadcaster Oseni Rufai wrote, “Rest well Alex.”
