Sultan of Sokoto urges Muslims to watch for the Rabi’ul Awwal moon on August 13 and report any confirmed sighting through traditional channels.

The Sultan of Sokoto has issued a directive to Muslims across Nigeria ahead of the expected start of Rabi’ul Awwal 1448 AH.

The Sultan of Sokoto asked Muslims to look out for the new crescent on Thursday, August 13, 2026.

The directive was announced by Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, Wazirin Sokoto. He is also the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sultanate Council.

According to the council, Thursday marks the 29th day of Safar 1448 AH. Therefore, Muslims have been asked to search for the new moon of Rabi’ul Awwal.

Muslims who sight the crescent have been urged to report it without delay.

The report should first go to the nearest district or village head. Afterward, the information will pass through the proper traditional channels.

The report will eventually reach the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III.

The Sultan is also the President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs. The council plays an important role in matters affecting Muslims across Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the Sultanate Council urged Muslims to take the moon sighting exercise seriously. It also asked them to ensure that every confirmed sighting is reported through the right channels.

The sighting of the new moon helps determine the beginning of a new month in the Islamic calendar.

Rabi’ul Awwal is the third month of the Islamic year. Muslims in Nigeria and around the world observe the month for its religious significance.

As a result, the moon sighting remains an important religious responsibility.

The Sultan of Sokoto has therefore called on Muslims to participate carefully in the exercise. The official announcement on the beginning of Rabi’ul Awwal will follow the established process.

For now, Muslims across Nigeria are watching the skies for the new crescent.
